The Princeton Review GRE test prep is a well-established test prep company with three-course options: an in-person, a live online, and a self-paced option. They also offer customizable tutoring packages, an extensive library of practice tests, and a tailored review program. Their technology allows for personalized study plans and practice tests They also offer the most highly trained tutors and instructors in the industry.

The Princeton Review GRE prep offers online video lessons recorded by their expert instructors, interactive activities to test your knowledge, the most full-length tests offered by any test prep course, and personalized and adaptive lessons and exams.

With their online GRE Ultimate – LiveOnline course and their GRE Ultimate course (in person) they offer 24 hours of live instruction, with 180+ hours of total instruction available. Their self-paced course offers 24 hours of recorded lessons. All courses offer 470 practice drills, 8 full-length tests, and over 3500 practice problems.

All of the courses include dynamic video lectures that feature real instructors walking through the lessons. The virtual whiteboard allowing you to watch as an instructor demonstrates how to actually solve individual problems.

The Princeton Review GRE course fees start at $499 for their online self-paced course, and go up to over $1800 depending on your chosen package.  Their most popular course, the in-person course, is $1,299.

Free Resources

The Princeton Review GRE site offers limited free resources compared to its competitors. You can try a free Princeton Review GRE practice test online and receive a personalized score report. You can also try out the Princeton Review GRE prep for fourteen days or attend a complimentary information session. There is also some information on graduate schools and the programs they offer.

Best Features

Full-Length Practice Tests

If you have read any of our other reviews, you know that we value full-length practice tests as one of the best ways to prepare for the GRE. The Princeton Review offers eight, more than any other prep courses. The Princeton Review GRE practice test is computer adaptive, unlike many of its competitors. This gives you the ability to practice with a test that gets increasingly difficult after each correct answer, gives you the confidence to handle this unique type of exam, and gives you better opportunities to understand your own skill level. After each practice exam, you receive personalized feedback identifying your strengths and opportunities.

DrillSmart Technology

One of the best features of The Princeton Review GRE prep is their DrillSmart technology. It offers adaptive questions based on your performance, just like the actual test. Each DrillSmart session begins with a calibration question, which determines the difficulty of the remaining drill. Not only does it help you to practice at a level that will challenge you without giving you problems that are too far out of your current skill set, but it also gives you the opportunity to get comfortable with the adaptive feature of the test itself.

Essay Help

The Princeton Review GRE is the only GRE prep course that we have reviewed that offers essay help as a standard part of its courses. This is an invaluable resource, as most courses will offer it only in their more expensive tutoring or in-class options. You are able to submit your essay through the LiveGrader tool. One of their experts will give you suggestions on how to improve your essay, allowing you to practice your new skills (rather than potentially continuing to reinforce bad habits).

Semi-Private Small Group Option

I love this feature. It gives students a more personalized option, without the expense of a private tutor. With only three other students, you are able to get a more personalized and in-depth experience than a traditional class. They offer 24 hours of in-class lessons, in addition to all of the online materials.

Accessible Tutors

The Princeton Review’s Ultimate Course offers access to its instructors and tutors outside of the classroom, either by phone or email. This is an incredible feature that allows you more flexibility in your study plan and more personalized and detailed course work.

Adaptology is an advanced teaching method that only the Princeton Review GRE test prep offers. It combines their proprietary teaching techniques with the same technology used in the adaptive GRE. It helps students get an edge in understanding the concepts of the test as well as their own skill level.

Worst Features

The Princeton Review GRE test prep course lacks three things that I think are important: a mobile app, a quiz bank, and long-term access.

While Princeton Review does have customizable flashcards available, they don’t offer a test prep app, like Magoosh, and other providers. So, if you are the type of student that wants to study on the go, another GRE test prep course might be a better fit for you.

I am a big fan of the quiz bank. It allows you to customize your studying to the specific area that you struggle with the most. Unfortunately, Princeton Review GRE Prep courses do not have a quiz bank. They do have quite a few full-length exams, including one free one. So, if you are comfortable with your subject matter skills, but not as comfortable with your endurance or overall performance, then Princeton Review would work. However, if you want targeted questions, this might not be the best option for you.

Lastly, Princeton Review offers only 4 months of GRE test prep course access. Which is great, if that works for your schedule. However, if you are planning to take a little longer to study, or want the option of retaking the test after your first test date, this might not work for you.

Other Beneficial Features

Tutoring Packages

The Princeton Review may have the most experienced and knowledgeable tutors available, with three different levels of tutors, private-level (40+ hours of intensive training), master-level (500+ hours of tutoring or relevant work), and premier-level tutors (at least 1,000 hours of tutoring or relevant work experience).

The tutors are available both in person and online. Each tutor will work with you to make a detailed study plan, help set goals, and guide you through the entire study process.

You can customize the price based on the experience and expertise of your tutor, which is a great option because tutoring is usually the most expensive part of any test prep plan and with the Princeton Review options, you have a little more flexibility in price.

If you are not happy with the first session, they will find you a new tutor that better fits your needs. The tutoring sessions also come with the Princeton Review score guarantee. All of this makes the Princeton Review GRE tutoring package one of the best options out there.

Score Guarantee

The Princeton Review offers three different types of score and satisfaction guarantees, which is better than most of their competitors. They have a “Readiness Guarantee,” that allows you to take the same course over again, if available. Their “Satisfaction Guarantee” allows you to continue working with The Princeton Review for up to a year if you are not happy with your results, regardless of your score. And finally, like most of their competitors, they have a “Money Back Guarantee,” offering you a tuition refund if your score doesn’t improve after completing a course. Take a look at The Princeton review website for more information.

Trial Options

The Princeton Review’s trial options are limited. You get a full-length, computer-adaptive practice test with a detailed score report, access to some of their interactive videos, and access to DrillSmart. The trial lasts 14 days, and while it doesn’t offer access to their entire library of resources, it may offer enough to determine if the style is right for you.

You Might Like The Princeton Review GRE Test Prep Courses If:

You want a personalized study experience, and don’t mind paying extra for it.

One of the most impressive parts of The Princeton Review GRE prep is how many areas there are for personalization. From their DrillSmart adaptive questions to their Adaptology teaching methods, their courses are tailored to your needs. Their customizable tutoring packages also allow you to determine the best plan for you. They are the only test prep course we’ve reviewed with individual essay help, as well. The availability of instructors after class hours is also an incredible feature for those students looking for a customizable test prep option. If you need assistance in determining what to study and how – The Princeton Review GRE test prep courses are for you. While on the more expensive side, because they are so customized, The Princeton Review GRE test prep courses may offer the best use of each minute of your time.
